Mazhar Ahson is currently Director of the Office of Federal Assistance Financial Management at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.
He has served as senior financial management officer at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo; as senior financial management officer in Beijing, China; as senior financial management officer at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan (from August 1999 until July 2003); and as regional FMO for Kabul from 1999 till 2002. In that last position, he was responsible for opening, hiring and setting up of the financial operations of Embassy Kabul in 2002 after the re-opening of the Embassy.
Mr. Ahson has Masters degrees in Business Administration from University of Idaho, and Agricultural Economics and Education Administration from Washington State University. He is a CPA licensed in the state of Virginia and is also a certified government financial manager (CGFM). He speaks Urdu and Hindi fluently, and has a working knowledge of both Dari and Arabic.
Mr. Ahson has received the Department of State’s Superior Honor Award six times, the Meritorious Honor Award five times, and has been a runner up of CFO award in 2001. He also received a Superior Group Award from the Agency for International Development for his work dealing with refugees in 2001.
