Photo: Diplomatic Corps Visits Jet Propulsion LaboratoryThe Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) hosted the Diplomatic Corps for a tour on Tuesday, June 24, 2008. JPL is a NASA center located in Pasadena, California, specializing in the robotic exploration of the solar system and beyond. The laboratory manages the Mars Exploration Program for NASA, including the ongoing missions of rovers Spirit and Opportunity, and the latest arrival at Mars, the Phoenix Mars Lander. The Diplomatic Corps visited JPL's operations center for the Deep Space Network, the communication hub for missions in deep space; and the clean room where the next rover to Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory, is being constructed. They also heard a presentation on the images and discoveries returned from NASA's Cassini mission to Saturn. JPL manages 19 missions that are currently studying the planets, comets, stars and galaxies and our home planet, Earth. [State Department photo by Yale Scott]
