Diplomatic Corps in California

June 23-28, 2008, the Office of the Chief of Protocol at the State Department hosted the Diplomatic Corps in California. Forty-one countries were represented on the trip and approximately 80 Chiefs of Diplomatic Missions and spouses. During the trip, the Diplomatic Corps visited Los Angeles, Silicon Valley and San Francisco.

The Chief of Protocol of the United States, Nancy G. Brinker, created a new outreach division in the Office of the Chief of Protocol transcending the involvement of the diplomatic community beyond traditional Washington circles. Today, this initiative is thriving and includes “Experience America” trips designed to highlight communities around the United States. The trips offered the Chiefs of Diplomatic Missions an opportunity to connect with a broad spectrum of private sector organizations, not-for-profit organizations, academia and state and local government officials.
