Operation Lempira

June 1986, Honduras: Members of the U.S. Army Special Forces 7th and 19th Groups
demonstrate a mine detector to Honduran Army engineers during Operation Lempira.
Mine detectors are essentially metal detectors that enable the operators to sense the
presence of the metal in the landmine's casing or other components.  Conventional mine
(metal) detectors cannot detect the presence of the explosive in landmines.  As a
result, those landmines that have minimal-metal casings or components can pose a serious
challenge. Lempira was a charismatic 16th century Honduran chieftain. DoD Photo/John Walker.
