U.S. Embassy Inauguration: Yaounde, Cameroon

Ambassador Niels Marquardt offered the official inauguration of the New Embassy Compound (NEC) in Yaounde February 16, to invited guests including the Cabinet and National Assembly and Supreme Court Presidents of Cameroon.  President Paul Biya delivered an address of bilateral friendship.  Africa Bureau Assistant Secretary Jendayi Frazer participated at the inauguration ceremonies, including the unveiling of the NEC plaque within the atrium of the new $54 million building, now open after two years under construction.  During her visit to Yaounde, Assistant Secretary Frazer also conducted roundtable discussions on public health; gave an open press conference for Cameroonian media; signed an Open Skies agreement between the two governments; and delivered a policy speech at the International Research Institute of Cameroon.

The Embassy inauguration also marked the official naming of the Embassy Street “Avenue Rosa Parks,” in honor of the late U.S. civil right leader.  An official act of the Yaounde Municipal Council enshrined the law dated February 14, 2006.
