Earth Day in Sarajevo

Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs
Washington, DC
April 22, 2003

Deputy Mayor of Sarajevo Savo Vlaski, U.S. Agency for International Development Director Howard Sumka, and U.S. Ambassador Clifford G. Bond (left to right) participate in a tree-planting for Earth Day commemoration on April 22, 2003. Many trees were cut down during the siege of Sarajevo from 1992-95 during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent years, tens of thousands of trees have been planted in and around Sarajevo thanks to USAID and others. The tree-planting is combined with engineering, drainage and soil stabilization work to prevent hillside erosion from damaging the neighborhoods and infrastructure below.
