U.S. Embassy Official Presents Icon to Patriarch of Georgia

Tbilisi, Georgia
June 6, 2003

On June 6, 2003, U.S. Embassy Defense Analyst Dan Humphries presented an icon he painted to Patriarch Ilia of Georgia at the Patriarchate of Georgia. Humphries was accompanied by a delegation from the Embassy made up of Defense Attaché Mitch Jackson, APAO Burke O'Connor, Peace Corps Director Norman Hickey, and several other members of the Defense Attaché's office. The icon painted by Humphries, who is a member of the U.S. Orthodox Christian Church and studied icon painting in Bulgaria, depicts St. Herman of Alaska, St. Juvenal the Martyr, and St. Peter the Aleut. The Patriarch of Georgia graciously accepted the gift and expressed special thanks to the Embassy for its continued support and cooperation. The Patriarch said that he would like to invite representatives of the U.S. Orthodox Christian Church to Georgia to reinforce the good relations the two churches enjoy. The event was covered by all leading Georgian TV stations.
