Ambassador Bernstein's Trip to Jutland, Danish MainlandThe Danish Mainland, Jutland October 19, 2003 In a continuing effort to foster goodwill and strengthen the remarkable friendship that the U.S. and Denmark have shared for over 200 years, Ambassador Stuart Bernstein and his wife traveled to the Danish mainland (Jutland) on October 19-20. Their visit took them to the oldest town in Denmark -- Ribe -- which is also the home of the noted Progressive Era Danish-American photographer, writer and social activist, Jacob A. Riis. The Bernsteins were able to visit the permanent site of a Riis photo exhibit in Ribe. In addition to the cultural activities the Bernsteins experienced in both Ribe and Ebeltoft -- another small, old town on the eastern coast of Jutland -- which are critical in broadening the horizons of our mutual understanding, Ambassador Bernstein was also able to pay a visit to one of Denmark's largest defense companies (Terma A/S), which is hoping to be a partner with the U.S. military in the construction of the Joint Strike Fighter. All in all, this was a visit that accomplished a wide range of objectives. (Photos courtesy U.S. Embassy Copenhagen, Denmark)
