Marshall Center Exhibit InaugurationParis, France December 9, 2003 December 9, 2003: U.S. Ambassador to France Howard H. Leach, U.S. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Constance A. Morella, and Ambassador of France to the United States H.E. Jean-David Levitte participate in the inauguration of the Marshall Center Exhibit. The exhibit “The Marshall Plan: A Vision of a Family of Nations” was inaugurated in the George C. Marshall Center to pay tribute to the spirit of international cooperation born during the European Recovery Program, better known as The Marshall Plan which had its European headquarters in the Hôtel de Talleyrand. Prominent Europeans representing the 17 Marshall Plan countries formed the Organization for European Economic Cooperation. Led by Secretary-General Robert Marjolin, they and the Marshall Plan’s Special Representative to Europe, W. Averell Harriman, and his staff, worked tirelessly to establish and maintain both the economic recovery of Europe and a lasting spirit of international collaboration. Those unprecedented efforts helped to rebuild Europe and reconstitute its middle class. They also paved the way to today’s Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and, thanks to the vision and efforts of Jean Monnet, the European Union. As the world continues to encounter challenges to peace and security, this exhibit will remind viewers of the creative solutions that had many of their beginnings within the rooms of the Hôtel de Talleyrand. The Marshall exhibit was made possible by a generous donation from Mrs. Alyne Massey of Nashville, Tennessee.
