Independence Day Celebrations in RebildRebild and Aalborg, Denmark July 3, 2004 Background History of the Rebild Festival In 1912 a group of Danish Immigrants to the United States acquired an area of about 140 acres of the lovely country that lies between the Forest of Rold and the River Lindenborg. At the first Rebild Festival, held that year, the area was presented as a national park to the Danish nation. Since then the American Independece Day has been celebrated in Rebild by thousands. The festival is an expression of gratitude to the land which welcomed more than 300,000 Danish immigrants. The tradition has been maintained in order to strenghten the ties of friendship between the USA and Denmark. The keynote speakers at this year's Rebild Festival were Ole Henriksen, Etta Cameron, Camilla Ottesen, and Ambassador Bernstein. (Photos courtesy U.S. Embassy Copenhagen, Denmark)
