Cooperation with Cyprus on Preventing Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction

Nicosia, Cyprus
August 27, 2004

The United States and Cyprus work together to improve export control, border security, and prosecution and investigation of violations relating to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. From August 27 to September 3, six Cypriot Customs Officers joined nine Maltese law enforcement officers for classroom training in Valetta, Malta. The classroom training in Malta focused on seaport enforcement operations. Subsequent to the classroom training in Malta, the entire group of participants, including the Maltese officers, traveled to Limassol, Cyprus for the practical exercise portion of the training (September 6-8). The practical exercises were designed to use the skills and techniques learned in Malta. Under the guidance of U.S. Customs Inspectors from Customs and Border Protection, the participants searched containers and a vessel at Limassol Seaport. The participants reported that they were very satisfied with the training and felt that it was very beneficial. American Ambassador Michael Klosson attended the graduation ceremony and made remarks to the participants. The Deputy Director of Cypriot Customs also made remarks at the graduation ceremony.
