U.S.-Middle East Breast Cancer Partnership

Washington, DC, June 12, 2006: First Lady Laura Bush announced that the U.S. Department of State’s Middle East Partnership Initiative and Office of Public Diplomacy will work with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and women in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to accelerate the fight against breast cancer in the Middle East.

The U.S.-Middle East Breast Cancer Partnership will raise awareness of the disease and promote research, training, community outreach and women’s empowerment in the region.

The Middle East Partnership Initiative focuses on reform and supports programs that give people opportunities to have a greater voice in the future of their communities. The breast cancer awareness project brings the public and private sectors together and provides women in the Persian Gulf with experience in building coalitions and developing civil society cooperation around a common cause of critical importance.
