U.S. Government Provides Cash-For-Work Opportunities Through Apple Harvesting

U.S. Government Assistance to Lebanon

Lebanese students harvest apples for a thousand farmers earning money for themselves and helping local farmers.Within the context of the Humanitarian Assistance for Lebanon, HAL II program, the U.S. Government is assisting Lebanese farmers in harvesting apples from their orchards. On average, 650 individuals a day, including students, farmers and unskilled workers are harvesting apples for one thousand farmers. This program is creating cash-for-work opportunities and training support on harvest and post-harvest practices to unskilled workers, students, farmers and engineers in North Lebanon.

The workers will also sort, store, pack and transport the apples for distribution. Apples will be distributed to school children and other vulnerable citizens. Implemented by the Cooperative Housing Foundation (CHF), the program will assist farmers in marketing the rest of their produce by linking them to marketing outlets through the USAID-funded Central Agricultural Market project.
