U.S. Government Provides Supplies to Villagers in South Lebanon

USAID: Humanitarian Assistance to Lebanon

U.S. Embassy Beirut
December 18, 2006

The U.S. Government continues to respond to the basic needs of vulnerable citizens and families by providing non-food items to ensure survival over a period of four months. The elderly man from the village of Chouaia is one of the 2,900 beneficiaries under this program. He remained in his village throughout the hostilities this summer. The box he is carrying contains a hygiene kit, a set of cooking pans, and either a heater or a gas stove with complete accessories.

Implemented by the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), the program directly targets vulnerable citizens returning to the towns of Bint Jbeil, Marjayoun, Hasbaya and Tyre in South Lebanon, areas where IOCC is well established and has been implementing its school feeding and education program during the past five years. Funded at a level of $1,999,427, the program aims at supporting 350,000 residents in 65 southern villages, through water and sanitation interventions, distribution of educational material for psychological support, infrastructure rehabilitation of 23 public schools and distribution of emergency relief supplies for 2,900 vulnerable families.
