USAID: Humanitarian Assistance to Lebanon

U.S. Embassy Beirut
February 26, 2007

As part of the U.S. Government's efforts to support the affected areas in South Lebanon, 1,176 families in the villages of Debbine, Bourj El Moulouk, Klayaa, Marjayoun, Majdel Silm and Deir Mimes in the district of Marjeyoun received emergency assistance following the summer crisis. These families received fuel vouchers, blankets and food supplies for one month, to help them through the winter. The main beneficiaries of this assistance are families with no source of income, widows and families with members with physical disabilities. Furthermore, vulnerable populations in Baalback, Hermel, Nabatiyeh and the suburbs of Beirut are also benefiting from food rations and non-food items.

This initiative falls within the U.S. Government-funded Emergency Response and Recovery in Lebanon program. Implemented by Mercy Corps, the program is funded at a level of $13.2 million and aims to provide targeted humanitarian inputs for the most vulnerable households, while working through local partners to distribute essential food and non-food items, water, sanitation and hygiene systems. The program also supports economic recovery, social infrastructure rehabilitation and psychological activities for children and youth. More than 700,000 beneficiaries in more than 104 villages will be reached by July 2007.

"Photo of the Week" is a product of U.S. Embassy Beirut to highlight the U.S. Government's development, relief, reconstruction, and humanitarian assistance to Lebanon. For more information, visit the Embassy’s website at http://lebanon.usembassy.gov.
