Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, 2008: Sandy LienOffice of Civil RightsWashington, DC May 8, 2008 King San (Sandy) Lien was born in Hong Kong and spent the first part of her childhood in Taiwan. Her family immigrated to the United States when she was ten years old. Sandy grew up in North Canton, Ohio, where she had a traditional Midwestern and Chinese upbringing. Being part of the only Chinese family in town, Sandy had to learn from an early age to bridge the cultural gap that existed between the life she had at home with her parents, and the life she led with her American friends. Eventually, everyone in her family found a happy balance of East and West. Sandy now embraces these American and Chinese cultural differences for the richness that it brings to her life.
Sandy joined the State Department in May 2006. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Sandy worked for six years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, where she was a senior examiner in the Banking Supervision and Regulation Department. Sandy has a BS in Economics from Miami University, and a Masters in International Economics and Finance from Brandeis University. Sandy speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, and some Hindi. She has just finishing a two year consular tour in Mumbai, India, where she spent a year as the Acting IV Chief. Her next posting is a consular/political rotation in Beijing.
