The State Department congratulates Ambassador Nancy Powell and Special Assistant Christina Sanford for being awarded prestigious Service to America Medals for 2006. The medals recognize outstanding contributions by dedicated federal employees. They were created in 2002 by the Partnership for Public Service (a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to recruiting and retaining excellence in the federal civil service) and the Atlantic Media Company (publisher of The Atlantic Monthly, National Journal, and Government Executive magazines).
Ambassador Powell, winner of the Homeland Security Medal, led key diplomatic efforts to organize international preparations for an avian flu pandemic. Christina Sanford, recipient of the Call to Service Medal, served as chief of the legal office at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq and provided critical support for Iraq’s democratically elected government. They were honored with seven other award recipients at a ceremony on September 27, 2006.
