Darfur Refugees in Chad

Chad, June 2006: Distributing firewood for cooking is a protection strategy. Refugees, mainly women and girls, face a high risk of attack and rape when they go to collect firewood. Firewood is scarce and without the UNHCR distribution, the refugees would be forced to walk many hours at great exposure. The U.S. government is the biggest donor to UNHCR. State Department Photo
