Photos: International Cooperation Saves Snow Leopard

Pakistan, August 8, 2006: Through the coordinated efforts of the governments of the United States and Pakistan, an orphaned snow leopard cub, one of the world’s most endangered mammals, is being transferred from the Naltar valley in northern Pakistan to a temporary home at the Bronx Zoo. Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans, Environment, and Science Claudia A. McMurray, who played a key role in facilitating the transfer, said this cooperative venture is a symbol of the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to conservation. It also demonstrates the breadth of US-Pakistani relations and signals an important victory for wildlife worldwide. Leo, an orphaned snow leopard on loan from the government of Pakistan, is thriving in the Bronx Zoo.  Snow leopards are among the most endangered species in the world.
