Ambassador Mathieu is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, and currently represents the United States to the Republic of Namibia. Her primary goals in Namibia include strengthening democratic institutions and respect for human rights, combating HIV/AIDS and promoting economic growth and prosperity.
Previously, she served as U.S. Ambassador to Niger. In addition, she has held other key positions in Ghana, Paris, Geneva, Jeddah, Port of Spain, and Santo Domingo, as well as at the Department’s headquarters in Washington.
A native of New Jersey, Ambassador Mathieu grew up in multi-cultural neighborhoods in Newark and Westfield. These experiences inspired a life-long interest in foreign countries and languages, and an appreciation of diverse points of view. In 1978, she joined the Foreign Service.
Ambassador Mathieu graduated from Antioch College with a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies, and received a Juris Doctor degree from Rutgers University - School of Law.
