Simone W. Johnson began her foreign affairs career in 2006 serving as a foreign affairs fellow in the Office of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL). Later, she interned in the consular and public affairs sections at the U.S. Embassy in Freetown, Sierra Leone and monitored the 2007 presidential elections.

In 2007, she joined the Foreign Service and served at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City adjudicating over 18,000 visas, issuing U.S. passports, and playing a key role in reuniting four abducted children with their families in the United States.

During her second assignment as an embedded public diplomacy desk officer in the Office of Cuban Affairs, Simone served a two-month temporary duty assignment as the deputy public affairs officer at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. Currently, Simone serves in the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) where she manages the migrant operations center at the U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay.

Simone earned a master's in international affairs (2007) from American University, Washington, DC, a B.A. in international business, and a B.S. in Spanish (2004) from Rockhurst University, Kansas City, Missouri. Her professional affiliations include Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, The National Dean’s List, Flon Eagle Leadership Award, Sigma Delta Pi Spanish Honor Society, and Delta Sigma Pi International Business Fraternity. Simone is fluent in English, Spanish, and French (to a lesser degree).

A first generation immigrant from Jamaica, Simone’s aspiration is to be positioned to influence policy towards her native country and her new home, the United States. From working with Habitat for Humanity to mentoring college students interested in foreign affairs or young teenagers with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Simone exemplifies dedication to public service.
