Date: 02/01/2014 Description: Black History Month 2014: Catrina Sykes - State Dept Image A native of Virginia, I joined the Army at the age of 19 and trained as an information systems operator analyst (74B). It was a difficult decision to leave home but I knew more awaited me outside of Virginia. I was blessed to be assigned to Fort Shafter, HI as my first duty assignment, where I would remain for the next 3 years. My next assignment was in the midwest to Fort Leonardwood, MO. By that time I had been in the military for 6 years and wanted to go home, so I reenlisted for Fort Belvoir, VA and had the opportunity to learn different aspects of information assurance.

I decided to leave the Army after 9 years and was hired as a Department of Defense contractor for the Defense Information Systems Agency as a security analyst but after the contract ended I applied for a government position back at Fort Belvoir and was hired as an information assurance security officer. Wanting a change in environment I accepted a position as an ISSO for the Department of State. I obtained an associate’s degree in business administration back in 2012 and I am finishing up my bachelor's in business with a concentration in project management. After that I plan on continuing on with my master’s degree in project management.
