The inaugural meeting of the Global Engagement Series brought together Department of State officials and state and local elected leaders. The participants included governors, mayors, local elected officials, principal staff members, state and local association representatives, and university and think-tank partners. The discussion outlined current Department of State priorities while outlining how the Department can be more effectively utilized by state and local governments in their international travel and engagements. Local elected officials also detailed how they can be deployed to help the U.S. tackle today’s important issues. Discussion topics included the President’s National Export Initiative, Shanghai Expo, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Haiti Long-Term Reconstruction, AGOA, APEC, food security, and the Global Health Initiative.
