Under Secretary Hughes Leads Presidential Delegation to Pakistan

On November 14, Under Secretary Hughes led a presidential delegation to Pakistan to view firsthand the devastation caused by the Ocober 8 earthquake. The Under Secretary, former Chairman and CEO of United Parcel Service, James P. Kelly; Chairman and CEO of Pfizer Inc., Henry McKinnel, Jr.; and Chairman and CEO of Xerox Corporation, Anne M. Mulcahy visited with victims of the earthquake at the U.S Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) operating in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan.
The MASH unit provides urgent medical care to more than 1,200 people injured by the earthquake. One month after the earthquake devastated India and Pakistan, President Bush praised U.S. relief efforts in Suth Asia and called on Americans and the international community to contribute more to help meet short- and long-term needs as winter approaches. The United States Government has made $156 million in relief funds available for a disaster that has killed more than 70,000 people.
The delegation also visited the Dewan Tent Village where they were able to see the Narol Government School up and running in a tent donated by the United States. The Narol Government School was completely destroyed by the earhquake, and 90 studens and 4 teachers (including the head teacher) were killed. On November 8, the Narole Government School resumed full operations after U.S. Navy Sea Bees cleared the rubble and debris from the school's premises and constructed six latrines. Under the overall coordination of the Government of Pakistan, 250 students now regularly attend the school.
