Celebrating Veterans Day 2011: Vangala S. Ram

Mr. Ram enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1982 as an interrogator (MOS: 96C). He served as a paratrooper at Ft Bragg and as an intelligence specialist in Germany, before going to Army OCS. He served for over ten years on active duty through Desert Storm and Desert Shield, as an NCO and commissioned officer. He has been in the U.S. Foreign Service for twenty years, with nine previous overseas postings, including a tour as Deputy Chief of Mission in The Gambia and Senior Civilian Representative to Regional Command (RC) West in Afghanistan. Mr. Ram has served in five of the regional bureaus in the Department: EAP, NEA, SCA, AF, and EUR in addition to the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM).

He has earned an MA in international relations with distinction from Boston University as well as a MS in national security resource strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF), where he was a distinguished graduate (DG). Mr. Ram’s foreign languages include: German, Russian, Persian-Farsi, and Arabic. He is proud to be among the first Americans of South Asian ancestry in the Department and he currently serves as Office Director for Regional Security and Arms Transfers (RSAT).

Mr. Ram was born and raised in New York City.
