U.S. Department of State
Washington, D.C.
May 15-16, 2003
On May 15 and 16, 2003, the Office of the Historian at the Department of State will sponsor a conference on U.S. relations with Guatemala during the 1950s. The conference will coincide with the release of a special Foreign Relations of the United States retrospective volume on U.S. involvement in the 1954 overthrow of President Jacobo Arbenz. This volume will serve as a basis of discussion of U.S. involvement in the 1954 coup d'?tat and the impact the episode had on subsequent U.S. foreign policy during the cold war. An expanded examination of this broader context will enhance understanding of this pivotal period in U.S.-Latin American relations.
