Department of State

 

Decimal and Subject-Numeric Indexed Central Files. Until January 1963, the Department of State used a decimal file system for its central indexed records. For Berlin the most important numbers under this system are:

762.00: general reporting on Germany

762.0221: the status of Berlin

962.72: access to Berlin

 

In February 1963, the Department of State changed to a subject-numeric system. Under this system, the most significant files for Berlin are:

 

POL US-USSR: general U.S.-Soviet relations

POL 7 US/Kennedy: general correspondence of the President

POL 28 Berlin: the status of Berlin

POL 38-9 and 10: access to Berlin
