Indexed Central Files. The main source of documentation for Foreign Relations, 1961-1963, Volumes XVII and XVIII and the companion microfiche publication was the Department of State's indexed central files. Through January 1963, the Department of State continued to use the decimal central file system familiar to users of previous volumes of the Foreign Relations series. In February 1963, the Department changed to a subject-numeric central file system. For the period January 1961 through January 1963, documents in classes 400 (trade relations), 500 (cultural relations), 600 (international relations), 700 (internal political and national defense affairs), 800 (internal economic and social affairs), and 900 (communication, transportation, science) were searched for decimal combinations involving all countries of the Near East (country nos. 83 through 88) and for the Middle East relationships of the United States (no. 11), the United Kingdom (no. 41) and the Soviet Union (no. 61).
Other files and related subfiles searched for Middle East related materials include: 033 (official visits); 120.15 (special missions); 123 (Department of State personnel files); various files in class 300 (international organizations and conferences); and 601 (diplomatic representation). Other documents were located through pursuing cross-references and referenced telegrams.
For the period February through December 1963, all subfiles under the categories POL (political affairs); DEF (defense affairs); AID (foreign assistance); FIN (finance); and PET (petroleum) were searched for all Near Eastern countries and Near Eastern regional terms. Special topics were searched under E (economics), REF (refugees), ORG (organization/administration), AE (atomic energy), SCI (science), UN (United Nations), SOC (social affairs) and in POL US (United States political affairs) and DEF US (United States national security and defense affairs). Other documents were located through pursuing cross-references and referenced telegrams.
