On Tuesday, July 10, 2012, Tara Sonenshine, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, addressed approximately 430 students in the Dean Acheson Auditorium as part of the U.S. Department of State’s Foreign Policy Classroom. The students in attendance represented more than 20 countries, coming from 115 colleges and universities across the United States, as well as several high schools.

Under Secretary Sonenshine’s remarks focused on public diplomacy and how young people can better prepare themselves to operate in this capacity, both professionally and as a citizen. In illustrating this point, she highlighted the value of working creatively and dynamically in the public sphere, particularly through the use of modern tools such as social media. Under Secretary Sonenshine was introduced by Mike Hammer, Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Public Affairs. Jennifer Olson, a Public Affairs Officer in the Office of Public Liaison, delivered concluding remarks to the program.
