MARCH 2004 -- Hometown Diplomat Tim Hall returned to his hometown of Oconee County, South Carolina where he spoke at an assembly at his former high school, gave a presentation to another area high school gathering, spoke at a Rotary Club, and was interviewed by three media organizations. He generated excitement about the State Department and the Foreign Service by sharing not only a history and general purpose of the Department, but also his own experiences in Chennai, India. While visiting, Mr. Hall received extensive media attention, including coverage by the largest newspaper in the area, the Anderson Independent Mail and a local radio station.

Of his experience, Mr. Hall said, “There are many people who still don't understand the role of the Department of State or the importance of diplomacy in the world today. The Hometown Diplomat Program provides us, as employees of the Department of State, a tremendous opportunity to explain to our home communities the work of the Department of State and our role as diplomats. I had a lot of fun visiting local high schools and answering students' and teachers' questions. They all seemed very interested in the Department of State and the Foreign Service. When a local person speaks on these subjects, it generates a lot of community interest. In fact, I had several calls from college students interested in working at the Department after I began speaking to groups and participating in media interviews. Participating in the Hometown Diplomat Program was a tremendously rewarding opportunity for me.”
