Austria: Effective Date of Agreement to Establish a General Settlement Fund

QUESTION: When does the January 2001 Agreement with Austria go into effect?

ANSWER: Once the Austrian government provides a diplomatic note to the U.S. government that it has fulfilled its obligations delineated in the January 2001 Agreement. The Austrian government has already passed legislation providing for the establishment of the General Settlement Fund.

There are also other commitments that are involved. The text of our agreement is available on U.S. Embassy Vienna's Web site at http://www.usembassy-vienna.at/restitution.html.
