| January 24, 2001 PRESS STATEMENT Kyrgyz opposition figure Feliks Kulov was convicted and sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a closed military court in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on January 22. The closed nature of these military proceedings, which involve an appeal of charges on which he was originally acquitted, contravene international human rights standards and make it impossible to judge their fairness. The charges and proceedings give every appearance of being politically motivated. We understand that Mr. Kulov will appeal his conviction to a higher court. We call on President Akayev to honor recent calls for judicial reform and increased protection of human rights in Kyrgyzstan by insuring Mr. Kulov receives a fair and impartial review. The United States will continue to monitor this case closely pending the outcome of the appeals process. [End] |
