Question taken at the April 2, 2001 Press Briefing

China: U.S. Citizen Prisoners

QUESTION: Does the U.S. Government have access to all Americans detained/arrested in China?

ANSWER: We have been granted access to all u.s. citizen prisoners/ detainees in china of whom we are aware. We expect to have access today (4/3) to the crew of the U.S. Navy plane that made an emergency landing over the weekend on Hainan Island.

QUESTION: Aside from those against Ms. Gao (who is a legal U.S. resident but not a citizen) and Mr. Li, are there any other allegations of spying or other "political" issues in the cases of detained/arrested U.S. citizens?

ANSWER: It is not generally our practice to publicize the charges on which individual u.s. citizens have been detained. That said, We are not aware of any such allegations.

QUESTION: Do you have any comment about a possible third U.S. citizen being held by the Chinese on espionage/security charges?

ANSWER: We are unaware of any American citizens detained on such charges beyond those whose names are already public.
