April 8 Peruvian National Elections

The United States congratulates the people of Peru on conducting a well-run and peaceful electoral process. Peruvian and international observer groups, including the Organization of American States and the Carter Center, have endorsed yesterday’s contests as fully democratic. These elections are an important step in the process of strengthening Peru’s democratic institutions and restoring the public’s confidence in the institutions of government.

We commend President Valentin Paniagua’s administration for ensuring the neutrality of all state forces throughout the electoral process and for providing all the candidates the opportunity to freely present their message. We applaud the electoral authorities for overcoming significant logistical challenges to stage transparent and efficient contests.

The United States looks forward to an equally peaceful and democratic process for the presidential runoff.
