U.S. Contributes an Additional $26 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

The United States announces an additional contribution of $26 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for its 2001 Annual Programs. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees is the lead UN agency responsible for the protection and assistance of nearly 23 million refugees and other persons of concern around the world. This contribution will bring our total funding for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, including emergency funding, to $172.5 million thus far in fiscal year 2001.

Of this $26 million contribution, $19 million is to be allocated regionally for UNHCR's programs as follows:

Africa

$ 6,000,000

Western Hemisphere

$ 1,600,000

East Asia

$ 1,000,000

South Asia

$ 1,700,000

Europe

$ 6,000,000

Headquarters

$ 2,000,000

Near East

$ 700,000

The remaining $7 million is to support activities that are of particular priority interest to the United States:

Programs for Refugee Children

$ 4,500,000

Programs for Refugee Women, especially in Africa

$ 500,000

Other Global Operations, particularly Emergency Response Preparedness

$ 2,000,000

The United States believes that the protection and care of refugees and the pursuit of permanent solutions for refugee crises are shared international responsibilities and calls on other donors to strengthen their efforts in support of the programs of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
