U.S. Condemns Killing of ICRC Workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The United States is shocked and saddened by the deaths yesterday of six staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ituri Province in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. Two ICRC vehicles were attacked by unknown assailants while traveling on a humanitarian mission in the region. A Swiss nurse, a Colombian relief delegate, and four Congolese ICRC staff were killed. The U.S. strongly condemns the attack and urges that its perpetrators be brought to justice.

The United States would like to express its deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased and to the larger ICRC community. The United States remains gravely concerned about the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and calls on all parties to respect international humanitarian law, abide by the Lusaka agreement, and seek an end to the conflict.
