Question Taken at May 24, 2001 press briefing

Mexico: Migrant Deaths (Taken Question)

QUESTION: How did the surviving aliens stranded in the desert make contact with the authorities? Who found them? Have they said who is responsible for their plight? Is there a Department of Justice or Border Patrol point of contact for further inquiries? Will the Secretary and/or the Attorney General attend the June meeting of US and Mexican delegations?

ANSWER: For further inquiries about the specific details of the search and rescue mission carried out by the border patrol, including any conversations with survivors, we would refer you to Nicole Chulick of the ins/border patrol. She can be reached at 202-514-2648.

The secretary is following the migration issue carefully. Following the meeting of the us-Mexico high level working group that the secretary co-chaired on April 4, much of the work is being advanced by the experts who know the issues well. The state department representation at the June 6-8 meeting with Mexican officials in San Antonio, Texas, will be led by assistant secretary for consular affairs Mary Ryan.
