Reeker, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC June 27, 2001 U.S. Contributes An Additional $11.61 Million to Feed RefugeesThe United States is contributing additional funding of $11.61 million to the World Food Program to fill critical gaps in refugee feeding operations across the African continent in Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Kenya, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. The United States is the single largest donor to the World Food Program, and, with the latest contribution, has given more than $424 million dollars to the organization so far this calendar year--nearly 60 percent of all contributions. The newest $11.61 million contribution will benefit more than one-and-one-half million refugees and conflict victims, including Sudanese refugees in Uganda; Burundi, Congolese, and Rwandan refugees in Tanzania; Somali and Sudanese refugees in camps in Kenya and Ethiopia; Angolan and Congolese refugees in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia; Western Saharan refugees in Algeria; and Eritrean refugees in Sudan. This contribution will cover approximately one month's worth of food for these refugees. This is a temporary solution. We call on all other donors to contribute generously to the World Food Program to ensure that these critical life-sustaining programs receive the resources they need for the balance of the year. |
