| January 26, 2001 MEDIA NOTE The annual Fulbright Foreign Student Washington Seminar, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education, will be held February 7-11, at the Wyndham City Center Hotel (1143 New Hampshire Avenue, NW) in Washington, DC. This year, the seminar will focus on the intricate and complex process of the U.S. census. The purpose of these seminars is to provide foreign Fulbrighters, who are graduate students selected for their academic achievements and leadership potential, with an in-depth exposure to American society, politics and culture, and the opportunity for discussions with U.S. experts and each other. The keynote speaker will be Kenneth Prewitt, former Director of the Bureau of the Census. His topic will be, "Drawing the Line: The Politics of the 2000 Census." Other seminar speakers will include: Robert LaMaccia, Assistant Division Chief, Geocartographic Services; and John Thompson, Associate Director for Decennial Census Management, both from the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. The Fulbright Seminar will gather approximately 115 foreign students who are currently studying at colleges and universities throughout the United States, along with ten recently returned American Fulbright alumni.
