| Press Statement Richard Boucher, Spokesman Washington, DC August 8, 2001 Former Secretary of State Kissinger Provides Department with DocumentsFormer Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger this week provided the Department of State with copies of approximately 10,000 pages of documents from his years as Secretary. The documents, transcribed secretarial notes of telephone conversations Secretary Kissinger had conducted from 1973 to 1976, complement other Department records from that period. Until last week, there was only one set of these transcripts, housed at the Library of Congress under a deed of gift made by Secretary Kissinger in late 1976 before leaving office. The Department requested that Dr. Kissinger provide copies of the telephone transcripts so that they could be included in the Department’s records, and Dr. Kissinger agreed to that request. The National Security Archive, a Washington, D.C.-based private organization, had written to the Department earlier this year requesting that the Department and the National Archives and Record Administration seek return of the materials for declassification review and public disclosure. |
