Uganda: Visit to U.S. of Kizza Besigye

QUESTION: What can you tell us about the visit of opposition politician Kizza Besigye to the United States?

ANSWER: We understand that Colonel Besigye arrived in the Washington, D.C. area last Friday, August 24.  Although he has not directly contacted the Department, an associate has asked the State Department for meetings on Colonel Besigye’s behalf.  We are considering meetings with State Department officials to discuss issues of Ugandan politics and events in the Great Lakes region. No meetings are scheduled at present.
