NetDiplomacy 2001: A Conference on U.S. Diplomacy in the Internet Age

The Department of State's Office of International Information Programs (IIP) will host "NetDiplomacy 2001" September 5-7, to explore how the Internet and new information technologies can reinforce American leadership in the conduct of international relations. The conference is designed for Department employees in Washington and the field, including American and Foreign Service National managers responsible for embassies’ Internet operations. Speakers and panels will discuss a broad range of policy issues associated with the Internet, information technologies, public diplomacy and foreign affairs. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will address the conference on Thursday, September 6.

Participants will interact with leading figures in the field of Internet-based technology. Key speakers will include Steve Hayden, Vice Chairman of Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide; Senator George Allen (R-VA); Under Secretary for Political Affairs Marc Grossman, and Michael Paige, Director of Xerox PARC.

Conference Plenary sessions and keynote speeches, which are open to the press, will take place in the State Department’s Loy Henderson Conference Room, 2201 C Street, NW, Washington, D.C. Specific areas of current and future department practices will be discussed in smaller breakout sessions, which are closed to the press. Media representatives who wish to cover "NetDiplomacy 2001" are to arrive at the 23rd Street entrance to the Department of State and must present either (1) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, (2) a US Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), or (3) a letter on official letterhead from the news organization verifying his or her employment as a journalist, accompanied by a photo ID (drivers license or passport). Media representatives will be escorted to and from the Loy Henderson Conference Room.

Camera preset is 7:45-8:30 a.m. each day. Please advise in advance of coverage plans.
