Secretary Powell Hosts Dinner to Honor Public-Private Partnerships for Humanitarian Demining

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will deliver opening remarks at a dinner he is hosting to honor public-private partnerships in support of humanitarian demining tomorrow, Tuesday, November 27, 2001, at 6:30 p.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room at the U.S. Department of State. A wide community of public-private partners covering the entire spectrum of mine action, from actual demining to mine victims assistance, will be in attendance.

Secretary Powell will acknowledge the significant role the private sector has played and must continue to play in helping to solve the landmine problem that plagues over one-third of the world's nations.

Ambassador William Luers, Chairman and President of the United Nations Association of the United States of America, and Her Majesty Queen Noor al-Hussein, a patron of the Landmine Survivors Network, will also speak. The United Nations Association of the USA launched the successful Adopt-A-Minefield program in March 1999. The United Nations Association of the USA and the Landmine Survivors Network are both U.S. Department of State public-private partners in humanitarian demining.

A short Warner Bros. public-service announcement video on landmines will be shown and a theater group will perform an act from their play about the global landmine threat, "Watch Your Step."

Secretary Powell's remarks, along with the other events prior to the dinner, will be open to the press. Pre-set for cameras will begin at 5:45 p.m. Final pick-up for writers and still photographers will occur at 6:15 p.m. at the C Street entrance. Questions will not be taken. Press may quietly break down equipment following the conclusion of the opening events, as dining commences.

Media representatives may cover this event upon presentation of either (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (driver's license or passport).
