Press Statement Philip T. Reeker, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC December 28, 2001
Resignation of Special Representative Hans Haekkerup
The United States notes with regret the resignation announcement today by Hans Haekkerup, the Special Representative of the Secretary General for the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). Mr. Haekkerup contributed significantly to the establishment of peace and democracy during his 11-month tenure as Special Representative.
Under Mr. Haekkerup's leadership, the people of Kosovo successfully completed several important steps in the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. He promulgated a Constitutional Framework for Provisional Self-Government in Kosovo and oversaw the successful completion on November 17th of the first election for a Kosovo-wide Assembly.
Subsequent to the elections, Mr. Haekkerup assisted in the establishment of the Kosovo Assembly and has over the past several months managed the planning, both politically and administratively, for the transfer of government functions from international to local competence.
The United States appreciates the spirit of collegiality and cooperation that characterized our relations with Special Representative Haekkerup. We look forward to continuing to work closely with his appointed successor.
