Press Statement Richard Boucher Washington, DC February 28, 2001
U.S. Urges Release of Turkmenistan's Shageldi AtakovThe United States condemns the cruel and unjust treatment of Shageldi Atakov, a prominent Baptist who is being held by Turkmen authorities. Mr. Atakov claims that he was arrested for his religious beliefs, and the evidence strongly suggests that he is being unfairly imprisoned. In addition, we have received reports from human rights organizations and the international religious press that as a result of alleged mistreatment he has suffered a heart attack and is seriously ill.
The Government of Turkmenistan acknowledges that Atakov could have been released under the terms of a December 2000 amnesty if he had been willing to participate in a public ritual of repentance. However, Atakov refused to admit his guilt and participate in this ritual. We hold the Government of Turkmenistan responsible for Atakov's health and well-being. We call for his immediate release.
