| Taken Questions Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC May 9, 2002 Taken Question from May 9, 2002 Briefing Belgrade Court Summons 17 Persons Indicted for War Crimes
Question: Comment on Belgrade court summonsing 17 persons indicted by The Hague Tribunal for war crimes? Answer: We welcome this movement toward cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. However, it is very important for the authorities in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to follow through with urgent and effective action. The authorities in Belgrade are well aware of the need for concrete steps forward with respect to access to relevant archives and witnesses and the transfer of at-large indictees. The necessary next step is for the Yugoslav Government to take remaining indictees into custody and transfer them to The Hague as soon as possible. All persons indicted for war crimes, including Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic, must answer the charges against them. |
