Muskie/FREEDOM Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program Alumni AwardThe Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State has named eighteen outstanding individuals from Eurasia to receive the first Edmund S. Muskie/FREEDOM Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program Alumni Awards (attached). Established to celebrate alumni accomplishments and contributions during ten years of the Edmund S. Muskie/FREEDOM Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program, the Alumni Awards are presented to outstanding alumni who have made notable contributions to the advancement of democratic society and economic reform in their communities. The Muskie/FSA Program was established in 1992 to foster democratization and the transition to market economies in the former Soviet Union through intensive academic and professional training, and has trained over 2,800 individuals. Fellowships are awarded for master’s level study and professional development in the United States in the fields of business administration, economics, education, environmental management, international affairs, law, library and information science, journalism, mass communications, public administration, public health, and public policy. The Muskie/FSA Program, administered on behalf of ECA by the American Councils for International Education and the Open Society Institute, is part of the Department of State's public diplomacy effort to foster mutual understanding between the United States and other countries through educational and training programs.
