Endorsement of UN Decision in Kosovo

The United States fully endorses the action taken by Michael Steiner, Special Representative of the Secretary General, declaring null and void today's Kosovo Assembly resolution on the border agreement between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Macedonia.

On March 7, 2001, the United Nations Security Council issued a Presidential Statement noting the agreement reached between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Macedonia concerning the delineation and demarcation of their common border. The Security Council emphasized then that the agreement "must be respected by all." This was reaffirmed by the UN Secretary General, and by the United States, in February 2002. The United States is, therefore, deeply concerned by the resolution adopted today by the Kosovo Provisional Assembly in which that body rejected the border agreement. The border agreement stands. There is no legal basis for its "rejection" by the Kosovo Assembly. The United States calls upon all parties to move to the agreement's fair and full implementation, including the accommodation of affected persons in the border area.
