Transfer of Leadership of the High Representative in Bosnia

The United States welcomes Lord Paddy Ashdown as the new High Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Lord Ashdown assumed office on May 27. We are pleased that he has cited rule of law, combating corruption, and institution building as his early priorities. These are the most critical remaining obstacles in Bosnia's path to long-term political stability and a self-sustaining economy, and we are confident that Lord Ashdown has the experience and ability to meet these challenges.

We would also like to thank and commend the outgoing High Representative, Ambassador Wolfgang Petritsch, for his leadership and work in helping Bosnia successfully achieve a number of the political and economic objectives called for under the Dayton Agreement.
