Exhibition of Joel Meyerowitz Photographs of and Design Proposals for "Ground Zero"

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State announced plans to present an exhibition of photographs of Ground Zero by the noted American photographer Joel Meyerowitz, together with design proposals for a new World Trade Center by Max Protetch. The World Trade Center: Past, Present, Future will present to an international audience the first responses of the architecture community to the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The combined exhibition will be on view at the U.S. Pavilion in Giardini di Castello, Italy at NEXT, the 8th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale from September 8 to November 3, 2002.

Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Patricia S. Harrison, in announcing the exhibition, said, "By linking the presentation of these design proposals with Joel Meyerowitz’s searing and powerful photographs of Ground Zero, the Department of State aims to illustrate not only the tragedy of this senseless destruction but also the indomitable spirit of people in the United States as they responded with heroism and hope for the future."

This public-private partnership marks the first time the U.S. Department of State has presented an official exhibition at the Architecture Biennale. Robert Ivy, Fellow American Institute of Architects (FAIA), the Editor-in-Chief of Architectural Record, is the Commissioner for the exhibition.

In addition to Mr. Meyerowitz’s photos, 27 of which have been traveling internationally under the auspices of the Bureau and the Museum of the City of New York, The World Trade Center: Past, Present, Future will include drawings, models and digital installations by Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Morphosis, Raimund Abraham, RoTo Architects, Daniel Libeskind, Frei Otto, Vito Acconci, Inigo Mangliano-Ovalle and the late Samual Mockbee.
